About the Artist - Joseph M. Wilson (sxwaset)
Joe Wilson was born in 1967 into the Cowichan Tribes Native Band and was raised in Duncan, British Columbia, Canada. His interest in art began in elementary school and when he was in grade 12 he made his own silkscreen print editions. Joe first began selling his carvings at age 17 at a local Koksilah Hills store. Since 1984 his work has reflected his search for his own cultural identity in Coast Salish art.

An accomplished, world renowned and prominent Coast Salish artist and carver, Joe has also been an advocate for H.I.V./A.I.D.S. and is on the board of directors for Kw-am-Kw'um-S'uli-Strengthening Our Spirit (S.O.S.). They meet regularly with staff and members from Aids Vancouver Island (Victoria) for education, support and to welcome all peoples living with H.I.V. into a caring environment. With the help of medications, Joe has been living with the virus for over ten years.

"This has been a wake up call for me and has given me a whole new perspective on life. This can happen to anyone. I pray to God every night, to take nothing for granted and to give thanks for every good thing. I feel that my life calling is to help people living with this however possible through my artistic gift. "

Joe's work can be found in galleries and public and private collections worldwide.
